This article explores the intricate connection between stunting, malnutrition, and the development of defect enamel and ECC in children. Methods: Narrative review use Pubmed and Google Scholar databases with article inclusion criteria, namely research articles and reviews that discuss the relationship between enamel defects and malnutrition and ECC with malnutrition Results: Childhood malnutrition, characterized by inadequate intake of essential nutrients, poses a significant global health challenge. Stunting, a manifestation of chronic malnutrition, adversely affects physical growth and cognitive development in children. However, the link between malnutrition and dental health has not received adequate attention. This article examines the mechanisms through which malnutrition, specifically stunting, can contribute to the development of defective enamel in children. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in calcium, vitamin D, and fluoride, are identified as key culprits in compromising enamel formation and strength. Weakening of the enamel leaves teeth vulnerable to dental caries, including ECC, which can lead to pain and long-term oral health problems. The complex relationship between malnutrition, stunting, defect enamel, and ECC calls for multifaceted solutions. Conclusion: This article highlights the importance of holistic public health initiatives, which encompass nutritional education for caregivers and improved access to dental care services for at-risk children. Interdisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals is emphasized to address the synergistic nature of these interconnected health challenges.
2023-12-29T00:00:00-05:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://adj.fkg.unand.ac.id/index.php/ADJ/article/view/262 Potensi Kader Posyandu sebagai Tenaga Skrining Early Childhood Caries (ECC) Tidak Terawat 2024-01-01T20:23:54-05:00 Arymbi Pujiastuty arymbipujiastuty75@gmail.com
Background: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a significant health problem. Untreated ECC can have substantial impacts on individuals and communities, causing pain, disrupting functions, hindering the child's growth process, affecting the child's weight, and influencing the child's developmental progress, ultimately reducing the quality of life for the child. Preventive efforts for untreated ECC include activities such as ECC screening, allowing for prompt intervention in cases of untreated ECC. Non-dental health personnel, such as community health workers, are alternative resources that can be empowered to participate in screening for untreated ECC using pufa Index. Purpose: to analyze the level of validity and reliability of community health workers in conducting screening for untreated ECC using the pufa index. Methods: The research design involves diagnostic testing with a cross-sectional approach, and samples are taken from children in community health posts using simple random sampling. The study is conducted in the working area of the Sijunjung Health Center, Sijunjung District, West Sumatra. Results: The reliability of cumulative PUFA examinations by Community health workers with a Kappa value of 0.88 is considered a very strong level of agreement. The sensitivity and specificity values of cumulative PUFA are 96% and 94%, respectively, which indicate excellent diagnostic values. According to data from the Central Statistical Authority, there has been an increase of 7 per cent in the percentage of elderly persons over more than a decade (2010-2021) to 10.82 per cent. The elderly age group is a highly susceptible group to a decrease in oral function caused by aging factors. Decreased oral function has a wide range of negative effects on the physical and psychological life of the elderly. Disorders perceived as a result of this condition will affect the nutritional intake of the elderly and also lead to a decrease in self-confidence, thus having a major impact on the quality of life of older people. The purpose of this study is to analyze the occurrence of xerostomy due to decreased function of the oral cavity of the elderly in UNAND RSGM. The research uses cross-sectional design, using total sampling techniques. A total of 30 elderly patients at UNAND's RSGM are expected to contribute to the study. Measurement of the state of decreased oral function is carried out with clinical examination, and subjective, then conducted interviews with questionnaires that have been tested validity and rehabilitation, in order to find out the determinant factors of decrease of oral function of elderly patients in UNAND RSGM.
